Nigeria Coach Keshi Talked Into Withdrawing Resignation

ABUJA: Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations winning coach Stephen Keshi has withdrawn his resignation after talking to the country's sports minister.

Keshi had initially stepped down from his role on Monday having just secured the Africa Cup Of Nation trophy less than 24 hours earlier, but the former Nigeria captain has now said he will remain in the role.

"My attention has been drawn to reports in the media that I have resigned my appointment as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria," he said in a statement.

?While I have had cause to express my displeasure over some issues that happened in the course of our participation in the Afcon 2013, which my team won by the grace of God, especially concerning my relationship with the Nigerian Football Federation, I have since had opportunity to discuss the various issues with all concerned.

?I am therefore pleased to say that I have reconsidered my position and have decided to continue with my job. I want to thank the honorable minister of sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, for his swift and kind intervention."

Keshi guided Nigeria to their first Africa Cup Of Nations victory in 19 years on Sunday, and became just the second footballer to have won the trophy as a player and coach.

But earlier on Monday evening, he announced his resignation as coach of the national team.

Keshi claimed on radio station Metro FM that before the quarter-final clash against Ivory Coast, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had already decided they would sack him as soon as the Super Eagles were knocked out.

He also said the NFF booked a plane ticket back to Nigeria as soon as they found out that they would play the Ivorians.

Tipsheet: Chemistry still critical to baseball success

Despite all of Bud Selig's chest-thumping, many baseball players still rely on drugs to enhance their performance.

Some players are still willing to explore the use of banned substances, as the Biogenesis hoo-ha with Alex Rodriguez suggests.

Some players are using legal drugs in ways that are well outside the boundaries of standard medical practice. Such is the case of Toradol, a nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drug meant for injury treatment.

Phillies reliever Jonathan Papelbon told ESPN.com that Red Sox players used the drug regularly as a pick-me-up during his time in Boston.

?It was kind of a word-of-mouth thing,? he said. ?You got in the clubhouse and said, 'Man, I feel like (bleep),' and somebody would say, 'Oh, you should get a Toradol shot.' All players talk about what gets you through a 162-game season.?

So what is the big deal here? Well, players were abusing a drug to boost performance.

Major League Baseball?s only stipulation on Toradol is that a doctor must administer it. When Papelbon got to the Phillies, team doctors told him they don?t use the drug, period.

Toradol abuse is cited in litigation filed by former NFL players against the league. Last September, ESPN.com noted, an NFL physicians society task force made a series of recommendations regarding the limitation of Toradol use.

The drug presents serious risks, including the potential of gastrointestinal bleeding. Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz ended up in intensive care with an extreme case of esophagitis.

The Digestive Health Institute website noted that England restricts the use of Toradol to hospitals and that other countries ban the drug entirely.

The Red Sox broke no laws. They broke no MLB rules. But they abused a drug meant to treat injuries.

?It made me feel better,? Papelbon told ESPN. ?You had to get it about 30 minutes before a game, and it made me feel pretty (darn) good. It only lasted about four hours maximum.?

Many fans believe there are two distinct groups of baseball players: One set that is totally clean and one that abuses performance-enhancing drugs.

In reality, science plays a major role in athletic training and maintenance. Some of that science gets pretty murky.

Defining whether a player is ?dirty? or ?clean? can become a matter of semantics.

MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE

Questions to ponder while the Blues wonder if goaltender Jaroslav Halak can save their day:

Will the Washington Capitals fight their way into the playoff bracket so they can bow out early again?

Is there anything wrong with Johnny Manziel having a little fun?

How do athletic departments get away with wholesale academic fraud?

POINTED OBSERVATIONS

Some thoughts on the wonderful world of sports:

?

  • Ladies and gentlemen, here come the Illini. They validated their upset of No. 1 Indiana by grinding out a 57-53 victory at No. 18 Minnesota to boost their NCAA Tournament profile. Our Town?s Tyler Griffey struck again, leading the long-range shooting attack with 16 points. Illinois (17-8, 4-7 in the Big Ten) has favorable home games remaining against Purdue, Penn State and Nebraska. If they keep shooting like this, they could break through at Iowa and/or Northwestern, too.
  • Their remaining games at Michigan and Ohio State are less promising. But then the Big Ten Tournament will provide the Illini additional opportunities. The NCAA selection committee pays particular attention to how teams finish. They also reward teams that play tough non-conference schedules and earn quality victories ??like those Illinois banked against Butler and Gonzaga earlier this season.
  • Illinois is just one team mucking up the tournament selection process. Upsets abounded over the weekend, with California winning at No. 7 Arizona, Wisconsin beating No. 3 Michigan, Oklahoma edging No. 5 Kansas, Notre Dame outlasting No. 11 Louisville in an all-night war, UNLV topping No. 15 New Mexico and Illinois State winning at No. 16 Creighton. Whew!
  • The Billikens are rolling too. Yes, a big portion of their Atlantic 10 road schedule features weaker teams. But winning away from home can still be problematic, as previous SLU teams proved. Travel in the A-10 during the winter can be challenging. So it?s notable that the Billikens have conquered many foreign courts this season. They prevailed in Saturday?s defensive struggle at Richmond, limiting the Spiders to 23.3 shooting from the floor.
  • Once again their 10-man depth proved handy as Cory Remekun fouled out and fellow big men Rob Loe and Cody Ellis dealt with foul trouble. John Manning provided seven sturdy minutes, helping Dwayne Evans (11 points, 11 rebounds in 34 minutes) and Ellis (nine points, five rebounds) maintain order in the paint. But as SLU?s No. 56 ranking in the CBSSports.comRPI indicates, this team still has work to do.
  • Mississippi was the perfect opponent to get Missouri moving again. The running Rebels did the Tigers a favor by dictating a fast pace at Mizzou Arena. Phil Pressey shook off his miserable performance at Texas A&M and spurred his team to a 98-point outburst. He was feeling it early, so he ended up launching 23 shots in the game. That was excessive, of course, but Pressey hit timely jumpers and made several electrifying plays in the open court.
  • Emotional Alex Oriakhi made the most of the home-court officiating with his 22-point, 18-rebound domination of the paint. That same, um, robust effort on the road might have earned him five fouls and an early seat on the bench. As it was, he triggered an unfortunate fracas that led to the ejection of Ole Miss forward Reginald Buckner. That was just Alex being Alex.
  • Frank Haith trimmed his rotation to seven players and the Tigers managed to sustain their scoring pace for 39 minutes. Another explosive performance by Keion Bell (21 points, 3-for-3 on three-pointers from the corner) offset a sluggish game from Laurence Bowers, who is still trying to regain his legs after spraining his ?good? knee earlier this season.
  • But, yes, the Tigers remain on the NCAA Tournament bubble. They must either win some SEC road games or win the SEC Tournament to get there.

QUIPS ?R US

Here is what some of America?s leading sports pundits have been writing:

Johnette Howard, ESPN.com: ?He's flown his freak flag for six seasons in San Francisco, a free-spirited place where being eccentric may actually help him blend in, not stand out. He and the city and the Giants always seemed like a perfect fit. ?It's like Halloween in the stands there every night,? Giants closer Brian Wilson once said with a laugh in 2010, back when the ?Fear the Beard? rally cry first rose up around him and the Giants' team of ?misfits? stormed all the way to a surprising World Series title over the Texas Rangers. But now, with days to go before pitchers and catchers report to spring training, Wilson is 10 months removed from his second Tommy John surgery and the Giants didn't tender him a contract. He's still trying to get a job. And if you know anything about Wilson, that process is a bit odd to imagine, is it not??

Andy Glockner, SI.com: ?For the first 39 minutes of regulation, Louisville-Notre Dame was as unremarkable a February league game you could find. Both offenses had struggled to the point where, when Russ Smith dunked to give the Cardinals a 55-48 lead, the contest seemed over. The only certainties looked to be the Under and that the viewing audience would forget about it about 10 seconds after it ended. Then, it elevated to legend, and the only certainty now is it will be the game of the 2012-13 season. Jerian Grant, who had gone without a field goal until that final minute of regulation, made a three-pointer. Then another three. Then a ridiculous three with a defender draped all over him. Then he got frisky and went to the tin, drawing the harm to go with the hoop and suddenly the game was level at 60. Twelve points in a 23-second span and a game that was basically over now headed to overtime. Then it kept going . . . and going . . . and going. All that was missing by the middle of the fifth overtime was the Energizer Bunny thumping its way across the clover at midcourt. Irish players kept fouling out. Louisville kept clanking game-winning shots. By the end of the madness, Grant's final-minute heroics were about the 27th craziest thing that happened. It was so nuts, so comical, so incredible, and generated so many questions, both for the game and potentially where these teams are now headed.?

David Whitley, Sporting News: ?The BCS is looking for a few good men and women. Football expertise is a must, and it would help if they didn?t mind being referred to as a ?corpse.? The job is selecting four teams for college football?s playoff system. It will begin after next season, and BCS commissioners laid out the framework this week . . . Picking four playoff finalists will be the best and worst job in America. It offers the prestige and influence of the U.S. Supreme Court, and you don't have write all those boring opinions. The downside is your opinion will be sliced and diced by millions of Americans. And you may be, too. I don?t want to overstate things, since 99.94 percent of college football fans are not certifiably insane. They may want to be buried in official Ohio State or Notre Dame caskets. But who among us doesn?t? It?s that special sliver of lunacy I worry about. Like Harvey Updike, the Alabama fan who poisoned Auburn?s famed Toomer?s Corner oak trees. If committee members get it wrong, they may look out their front window one morning and see their yards have turned into the Mojave Desert.?

Patrick Hruby, Sports on Earth: ?With apologies to the NFL communications intern charged with faxing and/or emailing the same brain trauma statement over and over again, allegations that the league sought to mislead players, cover up the problem and generally keep the football universe's collective head stuck in the sand do have merit. Lots of merit, actually. Maybe not in a legal sense, inside a courtroom, where culpability is determined by billable hours and the fate of the free world can hang on the semantics of what "is" is. But definitely in a moral sense. And definitely in a common sense sense. Consider the facts. Not the facts that may be uncovered during a future discovery process, assuming the concussion lawsuits progress to that point. Just the facts we know right now. The stuff already in the public domain.?

MEGAPHONE

?Better coaches than me have been fired. Just not many.?

??Ever confident Rob Ryan, after becoming defensive coordinator in New Orleans.

Senator vows to delay Obama's nominees over Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A leading Republican senator said Sunday he would hold up Senate confirmation of President Barack Obama's nominees to head the Pentagon and the CIA until the White House provided more answers about the Sept. 11 attack against a U.S. installation in Benghazi, Libya.

The White House took aim at South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a persistent critic of Obama's response to the terrorist assault, by urging quick approval of the president's second-term national security team and scolding any lawmakers trying to "play politics" with critical nominations.

Graham accused the White House of "stonewalling" requests to release more information about the attack that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya. "We're going to get to the bottom of Benghazi," he told CBS' "Face the Nation."

A Democratic colleague branded Graham's threat to stall the nominations of former Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., to be defense secretary and John Brennan, Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, to be CIA director as "unprecedented and unwarranted." Senators should have the chance to vote on the fate of those nominees, said Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island.

The White House did not address Graham's demand for more information, but did note that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testified Thursday before Congress about the chaotic day of the Sept. 11 attack.

In January Graham had signaled he would delay Brennan's pick and told Fox News he would "absolutely" block Hagel unless Panetta and Dempsey testified about the Benghazi attack. The senator said he was "happy as a clam" when he learned the hearing with Panetta and Dempsey had been scheduled.

Republicans have accused the Obama administration of an election-year cover-up of the attack and at the hearing several suggested the commander in chief was disengaged as Americans died.

"We know nothing about what the president did on the night of September 11th during a time of national crisis, and the American people need to know what their commander in chief did, if anything, during this eight-hour attack," Graham said on CBS.

Graham contended that a six-person rescue team was delayed from leaving the Benghazi airport because of problems "with the militias releasing them and a lot of bureaucratic snafus," and he said he wants to know whether Obama called any Libyan officials to expedite their mission.

"I don't think we should allow Brennan to go forward for the CIA directorship, Hagel to be confirmed to secretary of defense until the White House gives us an accounting," Graham said, adding, "What did he do that night? That's not unfair. The families need to know, the American people need to know."

Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the White House's National Security Council, said, "We believe the Senate should act swiftly to confirm John Brennan and Sen. Hagel. These are critical national security positions and individual members shouldn't play politics with their nominations."

Reed said that "to dwell on a tragic incident and use that to block people is not appropriate. To try to find information, to ask legitimate questions, as Senator Graham is doing is completely appropriate. But then to turn around and say, 'I'm going to disrupt, essentially, the nomination of two key members of the President's Cabinet,' I don't think that's appropriate, I don't think it's warranted, I think it is an overreaction that is not going to serve the best interest going forward of the national security of the United States."

Graham would have none of it.

"In a constitutional democracy, we need to know what our commander in chief was doing at a time of great crisis, and this White House has been stonewalling the Congress, and I'm going to do everything I can to get to the bottom of this so we'll learn from our mistakes and hold this president accountable for what I think is tremendous disengagement at a time of national security crisis," he said.

At the Senate hearing, Panetta testified that he and Dempsey were meeting with Obama when they first learned of the Libya assault. He said the president told them to deploy forces as quickly as possible. Graham asked whether Panetta spoke again to Obama after that first meeting. Panetta said no, but that the White House was in touch with military officials and aware of what was happening. At one point, Graham asked Panetta if he knew what time Obama went to sleep that night. The Pentagon chief said he did not.

(AP) ? One person was killed as protests broke out in at least two parts of Indian-controlled Kashmir on Sunday despite a strict curfew to prevent violence after the execution of a Kashmiri man convicted in a deadly 2001 attack on India's Parliament.

Mohammed Afzal Guru was hanged in New Delhi early Saturday. Ahead of the execution, authorities ordered people in most of the Indian-held part of the disputed Kashmir region to remain indoors indefinitely in anticipation of anti-India protests.

On Sunday, scores of people defied the curfew and clashed with troops who fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowds, a police officer said on customary condition of anonymity. Police said a man died in Sumbal village in northern Kashmir after he jumped into a frigid river while trying to run away from troops who were firing tear gas and using batons to disperse the mob.

In Watergam, a village near the town of Sopore, which was Guru's home, at least four people were wounded, one critically, as police and paramilitary troops fired tear gas shells and bullets to disperse an angry crowd, police said. Four policemen were injured in separate clashes. Police said 23 troops and 13 protesters were injured in demonstrations on Saturday.

Tens of thousands of security troops were fanned out across the Himalayan region, and metal barricades and razor wire blocked all major roads in the area.

Cable television and mobile Internet services were shut down in most parts of the region, and most local newspapers were not available Sunday.

Greater Kashmir, an English language newspaper, said on its website that police went to the printing presses of most local newspapers and asked managers not to publish Sunday editions.

Showkat Ahmed Motta, the editor of another English daily, Kashmir Reader, said that his paper published Sunday's edition, but that police seized the copies.

A top local police official denied that any newspapers were stopped from publishing, but said the strict curfew may have prevented copies of the papers from reaching readers.

Guru's execution is an extremely sensitive matter in the Himalayan region, where most people believe his trial was not fair. Several rights groups across India and political groups in Indian Kashmir have also questioned the fairness of his trial.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided between Hindu-dominated India and Muslim-majority Pakistan but is claimed by both nations.

Since 1989, an armed uprising in the region and an ensuing crackdown have killed an estimated 68,000 people, mostly civilians.

Guru confessed in TV interviews that he helped plot the attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people, including the five gunmen, but later denied any involvement and said he had been tortured into confessing.

Government prosecutors said that Guru was a member of the Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed, a charge Guru denied.

Guru had been on death row since first being convicted in 2002. Subsequent appeals in higher courts were also rejected, and India's Supreme Court set an execution date for October 2006. But his execution was delayed after his wife filed a mercy petition with India's president. That petition, the last step in the judicial process, was turned down last week.

While Indian government officials said that Guru's family had been informed of his imminent execution by express mail, the family said it learned of it only through television news.

"I wish we were the ones authorized to give the news to the family ? we owed him that much," Omar Abdullah, Indian Kashmir's top elected official, told CNN-IBN news channel on Sunday.

After the execution, Guru was buried in the prison compound.

The secrecy with which Guru's execution was carried out was similar to the execution in November of Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Kasab was buried in the western Indian prison where he was hanged.

All Critics (76) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (3)

It tells the story of a terrible crime compounded by a grave injustice that's been remedied, but only in part, so it's impossible to have a single or simple response to the movie.

What sets this film apart from previous efforts to document the story is that Jackson and Walsh financed a private investigative team with legal and forensic experts who re-examined old evidence, conducted new interviews and found new witnesses.

Happy, sad, inspiring, infuriating, right and terribly wrong, all at the same time.

Berg's film is as much an indictment of the state of Arkansas' legal system as it is the prosecution.

Berg's film helps illuminate a case that should certainly be the shame of the state of Arkansas, and perhaps the criminal justice system of the entire United States.

Dubious evidence; suspicious confessions; conveniently located "poor white trash" (Echols' words) to take the rap: The case stank from the beginning, Berg's film argues.

A powerful, touching and very infuriating documentary, although Berlinger and Sinofsky got there first and did it best

Amy Berg's West of Memphis does bring new information to light, which is why this somewhat procedural feature is so important.

In all, the director has assembled a powerful film, but the celebrity component feels rather unnecessary.

A frankly extraordinary document about the three innocent children who were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas and the three innocent teenagers who spent 18 years in prison for the crime.

(Director Amy) Berg's doc is gripping, often infuriating, but in the end hopeful about the ability of truth and innocence to prevail thanks to the efforts of those who strive against all obstacles to uphold them.

The new film is largely a recap of the older ones, with more celebrity testimonials and fewer Metallica songs but little fresh insight into the miscarriage of justice it chronicles.

Extols the efforts of celebrities to win the release of three innocent men [and is] suspenseful when it's straightforward-the best CSI investigation that money can buy.

Nearly overwhelms you with hopelessness, if not an adrenaline rush of rage - even if you're familiar with the case.

It's a beautifully done piece of work in its own right, yet viewed beside the trilogy which preceded it, it comes across a bit like "Paradise Lost 3b - the Celebrity Edition."

A whodunit in which truth devastatingly becomes a luxury.

New evidence and a fresh perspective keep the subject matter compelling.

Doctors to review USS Cole suspect's CIA detention records

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) - CIA records documenting the waterboarding and interrogation of an alleged al Qaeda chieftain must be shown to the doctors who will decide whether he is mentally competent for trial on charges of conspiring to bomb a U.S. warship, a judge ordered.

The order, dated Thursday, ensures that the mental competency board will consider allegations that Saudi defendant Abd al Rahim al Nashiri was tortured during the four years he spent in secret CIA prisons, among other criteria.

Nashiri, 48, is accused of directing the suicide bombers who rammed a boat full of explosives into the USS Cole off Yemen in October 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and wounding 37. He faces murder and attempted murder charges in the war crimes tribunal at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in Cuba and could be executed if convicted.

The judge overseeing the case, Army Colonel James Pohl, ordered a board of at least three doctors and clinical psychologists to decide by April 1 whether Nashiri is mentally competent to understand the proceedings and assist in his defense.

Competency board members will have top secret security clearances and will be chosen by a general who oversees the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where wounded U.S. soldiers and sailors are treated.

Defense lawyers have never claimed Nashiri was mentally incompetent.

But once they said he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder brought on by torture in the now-shuttered CIA prisons, prosecutors said they were bound by the trial rules to ask that he undergo a mental competency exam.

The CIA has acknowledged that interrogators threatened to rape Nashiri's mother in his presence, subjected him to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding and threatened him with a gun and a power drill while he was naked and shackled.

Pohl's order said it will be up to the medical board to decide whether he is shackled and whether guards are present when they examine him at the Guantanamo detention center.

The judge's order does not mention the CIA by name but instructs the board to consider "relevant medical records and detention history of the accused, including classified records reflecting the nature of post-capture detention prior to surrender to Department of Defense detention" at Guantanamo in 2006.

Pretrial hearings in the Nashiri case were halted this week when the mental health issue arose and are scheduled to resume on April 14 if he is deemed competent.

Hey Monopoly, the clothes iron lives on!

When online voters nixed the clothes iron token from Hasbro's Monopoly game, the appliance was held up as passe, as something your grandmother once used to ease the wrinkles out of linens and handkerchiefs.

"Despite being an integral part of life when the token was added to the game in the 1930s, the iron has fallen out of favor with today's fans," the Rhode Island-based company said in announcing its replacement ? with a cat.

But even with the rise of wrinkle-free fabrics, the iron, it seems, is holding its own.

While U.S. iron sales declined in volume 1 percent last year, they were up nearly 3 percent overall from 2007 to 2012, according to the market research group Euromonitor International. Over the same period, steam generator irons ? which make more steam than traditional ones, speeding up the process ? experienced what the firm called "enormous growth." Sales were $368 million last year.

Kim Kalunian irons nearly everything: sweaters, dresses, pants, even jeans. The 23-year-old digital producer at WPRO Radio in East Providence inherited her distaste for wrinkles from her mother, whom she describes as a "fierce ironer." She finds the chore ? and the hiss of the steam ? therapeutic.

"It's sort of magical," says Kalunian, who irons in the morning before work and at night if she's donning a new outfit and going out. "There's these wrinkles there, and they're annoying, and you whip out this iron and you can banish them."

When she travels, she always checks her hotel room to make sure it has an iron, but draws the line at adding creases to pants ? or ironing sheets, pillowcases or underwear.

Rowenta, a manufacturer of high-end irons whose U.S. headquarters is in West Orange, N.J., says the appliance is as relevant as ever.

The company, whose products have been used to keep wrinkles out of the clothing on "Project Runway," is constantly updating technology to make ironing easier, faster and better for clothes, spokeswoman Michele Lupton says. Its regular models, ranging in price from $70 to $175, now include an "eco-friendly" one that uses less energy.

Hasbro nixed the iron after it got the fewest votes in a Facebook poll; it is being replaced with a cat. As a nod to its service, Rowenta plans to give away 10 board games with the iron token ? along with a real iron ? before the piece is discontinued. People will be asked to weigh in on Rowenta's Facebook page with their "fondest" ironing memories.

There are those, of course, who will go to any length to avoid ironing ? throwing dry clothes into the dryer to soften wrinkles, using special sprays, buying no-wrinkle fabrics or paying to have it done at the dry cleaner.

A man in Leicester in the United Kingdom in 1997 decided to spice up his dreaded ironing by doing it while rock climbing. Phil Shaw ? nicknamed Steam ? says in his book on so-called extreme ironing ? also done with skiing, snowboarding and canoeing ? that it "combines the danger and excitement of an 'extreme' sport with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt." Long extension cords hooked to generators were used at first, before the advent of battery-powered irons.

Consumer Reports noted this week, after the death of the iron token, that it had recently conducted tests to name the 10 best steam irons. Some, it said, cost "just a bit more than a Monopoly game."

BEGINNING ANEW: A mindfulness practice for communicating ...

Statue of couple communicating - beginning anew

Many people have experienced painful and hurtful relationships in their childhood,?youth, and adult life. Most people don?t grow up in an?environment where nurturing communication and?positive interaction exist. Often, due to this personal?history, many have difficulty communicating?with others because they?re accustomed to focusing?on the negative qualities in themselves and in others,?creating an experience of separateness, rather than?connection.

Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village Sangha?developed the practice of Beginning Anew to help?practitioners communicate with each other with?mindfulness and kindness. The practice provides practitioners?with the methods and tools to build stable?relationships and skillfully navigate the many storms?that arise in relationships. The practice supports you in moving towards the experience of connectedness?and away from separateness. Beginning Anew helps?you become aware of your own positive qualities that?exist in your store consciousness, and to know that?other people carry these positive qualities as well.

You can practice Beginning Anew with one person?or a group, with a family member, a partner, friend,?co-worker, members of your spiritual practice group,?or anyone else in your circles whenever difficult circumstances?arise. Beginning Anew works best when?you practice regularly, especially when you?re first beginning?this practice. You might decide, for example,?to meet at least twice a month with your partner, a?close friend, or a coworker to take part in this practice.?But, of course, this practice only works if both?people involved are willing to commit to this type of?communication.

Part 1 ? Watering the?flowers of gratitude

In the first part of Beginning Anew, one person talks?about the positive characteristics of the other without?exaggeration and flattery. This is called ?watering the?flowers in the other person.? You share all the positive?things you became aware of during the last week?or month. For example, you might say to your partner,??I was so happy that you cleaned the kitchen and washed all the dishes last week when I came home?absolutely exhausted.? The result of focusing on the?positive qualities of another person and expressing?them are often astonishing. Regular practice begins?to change your perception of the other person completely.?Instead of criticizing him or her as you might?have done before, you become researchers whose job?it is to detect as many positive qualities as possible.?You don?t want to sit at your next meeting with them?and not be able to mention any positive qualities.

When you first practice Beginning Anew, you focus?solely on the positive qualities in the other person.?This can be practiced for many months, especially in?a difficult relationship. It will result in a strong foundation?of mutual appreciation. I practiced this way?for several months with a friend and it was a great?blessing for both of us. We come from very different?worlds, but we lived and worked together. It was important?for us to get along. If we had decided to have?more customary heart-to-hearts in which we listed all?the things that weren?t going well between us, our relationship?might have ended. However, the opposite?happened for us. We started to look forward to our??flower-watering? nights when we could express?the?many beautiful qualities and features that we?d discovered?in each other. This first part of the Beginning?Anew exercise can bring deep healing to a broken?relationship.

Part 2 ? Confess your mistakes and regrets

In the second part of Beginning Anew, you confess?your mistakes and regrets to the other person. You?apologize for things you said, did, or neglected to do?that may have hurt the other person. For example,?you may say, ?I?m sorry that I hurt you with my?judgmental?remark. I realized later that this comment?was difficult for you and I shouldn?t have spoken in?that way.?

Part 3 ? Communicate your preoccupations

In the third part of Beginning Anew, you have an?opportunity to let the other person become aware of?a situation that may be preoccupying you and making?you less available. This can relieve the other person?of any feelings of confusion or guilt that might have?developed or any concern that he or she might somehow?be responsible for your changed behaviour. You?may be dealing with other circumstances that have?influenced the way you communicated with the other?person. For example, you may have learned that you?have a serious illness, that you might lose your job,?or that someone close to you needs care or might not live much longer. These kinds of situations can?easily make you anxious, and it?s important to share?these feelings with the person you?re engaging in this?practice with. There?s no need for the other person to?feel guilty or suspect that he or she is responsible for?your behaviour. You might say, ?If I?ve been sad or less?cheerful recently, please don?t think that this has anything?to do with you or something you have done. It?s?just very difficult for me to deal with this situation.?

Part 4 ? Express your hurt

In the fourth part of Beginning Anew, you talk?about the times when you?ve felt hurt. Expressing to?another person that you?ve been hurt should happen?in a calm way, never in an exaggerated, reproachful,?accusatory, or desperate manner. This is about the?healing of the relationship, not about hopelessness or?breaking up. Before you share how you?ve been hurt,?make sure you feel calm inside. You might even want?to practice sitting or walking meditation beforehand.?One person expresses his or her feelings of hurt while?the other person listens without responding, even if?the person who?s speaking says something that has?resulted from a wrong perception. Then you agree to?meet again at another time, so that the other person?may speak and present his or her perspective. Some people may want to invite a neutral third person to?witness this fourth part of Beginning Anew. Often,?the presence of a neutral person in these circumstances?can support a mindful and kind interaction.

Fashion GPS Breaks Into The Notoriously Tech-Averse Fashion Industry Just In Time For Fashion Week

Screen Shot 2013-02-08 at 3.22.36 PMAs you may well know from Twitter (or the inordinate amount of heels clacking through a snowy New York this morning), Fashion Week is underway. It’s like the Superbowl for designers, retailers, and everyone in between. But the fashion industry is ancient, and is thus quite averse to new technology of any kind. However, a company called FashionGPS has chipped its way into the world of fashion offering a one-stop destination for designers, editors, retailers, etc. to communicate during the most important week of the year. “We’ve been working on this for seven years,” said founder and CEO Eddie Mullon. “But only recently has the fashion industry become ready for this kind of tech.” FashionGPS is broken into several different iOS apps and web services that follow a product throughout its entire life cycle. First, GPS Events lets designers (who essentially coordinate the entire week) manage their runway shows directly from an app. Designers can send invitations to everyone important, track RSVPs in real time, and use an interactive seating chart to make sure everyone is in their proper place. If someone cancels or doesn’t show up, the designer can immediately give the seat away to someone else. In the past, this has been done with paper invitations, calls for RSVPs, and taken between four to eight weeks. When attendees arrive at the show, they can then check into the show with GPS Events (effectively skipping the line). From there, the process changes from coordinating an event to coordinating the various product samples going out to different blogs, magazines, and department store buying offices. Using GPS Radar, buyers and editors can have access to a lookbook immediately, and request which samples they’d like for advertising purposes. Again, what once took between six and eight weeks can now be done directly from the runway show. After samples are requested, the process gets even more complicated. Everyone from magazines to department stores need access to a single prototype before the collection goes on sale in stores. Tracking that sample across various locations and countries is almost impossible, and many samples are lost because of this. Fashion GPS offers an app called GPS Samples to solve this problem. GPS Samples lets editors and buyers scan the barcode of a prototype so that the designer can track it as it goes all over the world. But not all brands have fashion shows, samples or

New Technorati Report Says Most Marketers Expect Social Ad Spending To Go Up 40 Percent This Year

technorati report logoTechnorati has released a new Digital Influence Report, and the big theme (probably not surprising coming from a blog and social media ad network) is that most online marketing dollars aren't being directed to the "blogs and influencers" where they could have the greatest effect. At the same, social ad spending is expected to increase significantly this year. The company previously released annual State of the Blogosphere reports, but starting this year it's expanding the report's scope to include social media ? hence the change in name. The company says that it surveyed 1,200 consumers, 150 brand marketers, and 6,000 influencers. (I sent Technorati CEO Shani Higgins an email asking how those influencers were identified, and she said that surveys were sent out to the company's index of 2.5 million influencers, Technorati waited for 6,000 completed responses, and then it checked them to "make sure we get top influencers participating and a wide sample set.")

Samsung Invests In Cloudant, A CIA-Backed, YC Alum That Specializes In Database-As-A-Service Technologies

cloudant-logoSamsung continues to make good on its commitment to investing in more startups that will help it build out its portfolio of services beyond hardware. Today the company announced that it has taken a strategic investment in Cloudant -- a specialist in cloud-based mobile enterprise solutions, specifically around the area of NoSQL and database-as-a-service technology. By way of an investment from In-Q-tel, Cloudant counts the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies among its backers, and customers. And, perhaps in keeping with what you might expect from a company that works with the CIA, the value of Samsung's investment announced today has not been disclosed.

Toyota recycling old hybrid batteries into energy-storage systems for ...

TMC to Sell Electricity Management System Using Recycled Hybrid Vehicle Batteries to Toyota Dealers in Japan

Toyota City, Japan, January 23, 2013-Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that starting this April, it will sell an electricity management system that uses recycled nickel-metal hydride batteries from hybrid vehicles to Toyota vehicle dealers throughout Japan. Through such means, TMC is aiming for the more effective use of resources used in batteries. The systems will be sold via TMC's energy business company, Toyota Turbine and Systems Inc.

The energy management system will be sold in combination with Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), solar carports, solar power generation, LED lighting, energy-conserving air conditioning and other such items. The energy management system will make it possible to comprehensively control the consumption, storage, and discharge of electricity, as well as increase usage efficiency.

The fixed electricity storage system has been undergoing verification tests conducted at the Nagoya Toyopet Otagawa dealership and other locations since February of last year. By improving the usage efficiency of electricity-for example, by cutting the amount of electricity used during peak usage times-it was confirmed that the amount and cost of electricity and gas used for a single dealership can be decreased by half* compared to dealerships without the system.

Because backup electricity can be stored and used during power outages during times such as disasters, this system can be used by emergency response centers to power equipment necessary for gathering critical emergency information and to power evacuation shelters.

TMC will continue strengthening initiatives such as these as it works towards a sustainable, recycling-oriented society.

Key Specifications of the Energy Management System
Electricity storage capacity 10 kWh
Weight Approx. 980 kg
Size Height: 1,900 mm; Width: 1,140 mm; Depth: 1,280 mm

Video: Bradley Cooper on dancing, relationships in ?Silver Linings Playbook?

>>> we're back with bradly cooper, star of the great new philadelphia movie, i must say silver linings play book. here's another clip of the movie, but you've got to go see it. let's watch it.

>> can you talk about something that you did before or after?

>> yeah, about a week before the incident, i called the cops. and i told them that my wife and the history guy were plotting against me by embezzling money from the local high school which wasn't true. it was a delusion. and we later found out from the hospital it's because i'm --

>> undiagnosed bipolar.

>> yeah. with mood swings and weird thinking brought on by severe stress which rarely happens, thank god.

>> is that actor really from south asia ? or is that an ak acceptability --

>> yeah, that's adam pomkar.

>> he ends up at the eagles game.

>> yes, president green.

>> and you kbiguys all defend him. there's a scene in this, by the way, in which you do something to dance. they learn to dance. i'm bragging on this the other week. they don't bother taking dancing lessons. but you went out there dancing in this movie.

>> we certainly did. we trained everyone onset. and she had a lion's share. there were no dance doubles. that was us doing a very bipolar dance.

>> it was kind of an embarrassing shot in there. there's a scene in the movie which i think is the treasure of the movie. we probably don't have the clip. when robert deniro , your dad, realized that your first wife, which basically dumped you, isn't the right one, never was the right one and he has this great line with where he says she may have loved you once, maybe. but she doesn't love you now and this one does.

>> yeah, that's great. and that's a great moment. when we were shooting that moment, he had tears in his eyes and we thought, wow.

>> what a dad.

>> when you win the academy award for best actor , i think you should show that scene. are you going to see the troops?

>> yeah, we're going to go right now. we're going to show it to about 50 guys, do a q&a afterwards.

>> we're going to show them the movie. it's the best thing about this thing. it's able to reach out and make people feel included.

>> they're going to love it.

>> that's the main thing. serious business. thank you, bradly cooper.

Southeastern N.C. under tornado watch until 2 a.m.

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 8:35 p.m.
Last Modified: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 8:35 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for several counties in Southeastern North Carolina, including New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender.

Josh Weiss, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Wilmington office, said by phone about 8:25 p.m. that a squall line was heading toward Columbia, S.C., creating an environment that is favorable for tornadoes.

?Right now, we think the tornado threat is low,? he said. ?The primary threat looks like damaging straight line winds.?

The watch is in effect until 2 a.m. but could be extended depending on how the squall line evolves, Weiss said.

Meanwhile, a wind advisory issued earlier for the region is in effect until 6 a.m.

Winds of 20 mph to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

The winds might be capable of downing trees and power lines and isolated power failures are likely, the weather service said.

Those driving tall vehicles should use caution, especially when traveling on bridges and overpasses.

Wednesday night, showers are likely and severe thunderstorms are possible.

Israel must withdraw from settlements immediately, U.N. investigation finds

JERUSALEM?(JTA) -- A United Nations investigation into the impact of Jewish West Bank settlements on the Palestinian population said that Israel should immediately begin to withdraw all settlers from the territory.

The report issued Thursday by the U.N. Human Rights Council based in Geneva said that settlement violate the 1949 Geneva Conventions and that failure to withdraw could lead to a finding of war crimes at the International Criminal Court.

The Palestinians have threatened to take Israel to the ICC since the Palestinian Authority was recognized as having non-member state status in the General Assembly in November.

The Human Rights Council's investigation began last March. Israel did not cooperate with the investigation, including barring investigators from entering the territory, saying that the council is biased against the Jewish state. The council has issued more resolutions regarding Israeli human rights violations than any country.

The report said that Israel "must, in compliance with article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, cease all settlement activities without preconditions. It must immediately initiate a process of withdrawal of all settlers from the OPT," or Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Investigators interviewed about 50 Palestinians in Jordan in order to prepare the report. The report said that the Palestinians were prevented by the settlements from reaching their farming lands and water resources.

The report estimated that 520,000 settlers live in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem in some 250 settlements.

This, according to the report, "prevents the establishment of a contiguous and viable Palestinian state and undermines the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination."

Israel's Foreign Ministry rejected the report, calling it "counterproductive." The report "will only hamper efforts to find a sustainable solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict,? the ministry said in a statement.

?The only way to resolve all pending issues between Israel and the Palestinians, including the settlements issue, is through direct negotiations without pre-conditions," the ministry said. .

??The Human Rights Council has sadly distinguished itself by its systematical, one-sided and biased approach towards Israel. This latest report is yet another unfortunate reminder of such approach,? the ministry concluded.
