CES 2013 by the numbers

CES 2013 by the numbers

CES is pretty big. If you haven't already had it explained, it's a sprawling collection of cavernous halls, hotel suites and in-town meetings that require an unhealthy amount of coach trips and taxi rides. We've pulled together some numbers to help demonstrate the sort of scale involved but when you involve the likes of Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and more than 150,000 attendees, it's going to get a little messy.

RadioShack's Target Mobile partnership to end on April 8th

RadioShack's Target Mobile partnership to end on April 8th

If you're planning on waltzing into a Target store and picking up a cellphone with a monthly plan, you only have until April 8th to do so. RadioShack, which operates Target Mobile in 1,500 Target stores, has come to an agreement with its fellow retailer to end the relationship, effective April 8, 2013. The duo says they're parting ways on amicable terms since they couldn't strike a new deal -- which they've been hoping to hammer out since October -- that would make the business profitable for each party. For those whose fancies are struck by pay-as-you-go solutions, Target's prepaid mobile business won't be affected by the deal.

We really need more information. The debt could become pretty substantial if the prime rate were to rise considerably. Do you have the funds to pay the tax balance in that situation?

That actually sounds like a pretty good deal to me; Texas charges a flat 8% per year when deferring the already-high property taxes.

Well I am not a financial planner or anything like this but I when saw your post I thought :

1. how old is Meadbh ? Your decision may not be the same if you are in your late 40s or early 70s for example;

2. what is her principal residence worth ?

3. what is her annual withdrawal (e.g. if your annual withdrawal is $100,000, deferring taxes may not be worth the hassle / worth the time).

4. Does she have heirs ?

Good luck in your decision.

What information would you like, obgyn?

Facebook shares rise in buildup to mystery event, earnings

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc's stock opened on Monday above $32 for the first time since July as anticipation about upcoming products and financial results underscored Wall Street's renewed confidence in the online social network.

Facebook will on Tuesday host its first major press event at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, since its troubled initial public offering in May, triggering a guessing game among technology observers and online blogs about what it could unveil - everything from a smartphone to a search engine.

"There's a lot of speculation. Nothing to me seems to be that certain," Jefferies & Co analyst Brian Pitz said.

"If I were to bet, I'd think it was something that was ad-platform related. I'm not convinced on the phone," said Pitz, citing previous comments by Facebook's leaders including CEO Mark Zuckerberg that making a smartphone would be the "wrong strategy" for Facebook.

In an email to reporters last week, Facebook invited the media to "come and see what we're building" without providing details.

Some analysts said the stock's recent gains - shares are up roughly 17 percent since the start of the year - may have more to do with the company's upcoming fourth-quarter financial results, slated for January 30.

"The stock is up because they have driven a dramatic increase in the ad load of their mobile app which is giving investors hope that they exceeded expectations," BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield said.

Shares were down about 1.3 percent to $31.30 in mid-afternoon trading.

The world's No.1 social network with 1 billion users, Facebook became the first U.S. company to debut on stock markets with a value of more than $100 billion. Its value subsequently plunged by more than 50 percent on mounting concerns about slowing revenue growth and the challenges of making money as users shift from personal computers to mobile devices.

Facebook surprised Wall Street in the third quarter by announcing that mobile ads accounted for 14 percent of its total ad revenue. Some analysts expect the company to report further growth in its nascent mobile ad business for the fourth quarter.

Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook in his Harvard dorm room, has said that mobile is the "most misunderstood aspect" of Facebook. But he has repeatedly poured cold water on rumors that Facebook would build its own smartphone to compete against Apple Inc's iPhone and smartphones based on Google Inc's Android operating system.

During an on-stage interview at a conference in September, Zuckerberg said that he believed search could be a ripe area of growth for Facebook.

"Facebook is really uniquely positioned to answer a lot of the questions that people have," Zuckerberg said, such as finding a good restaurant or learning more about a job opportunity.

Still, many technology observers believe that Facebook is more likely to improve the search capabilities within Facebook than to develop a full-fledged search engine that indexes all the Web's content and competes head-on with search leader Google.

Among the other items that technology blogs and analysts speculate might be unveiled on Tuesday were new standalone apps for Apple's iPad tablet, new features to display video ads and even a new wing of corporate headquarters.

Some cautioned that expectations of a game-changing new product were likely to cause disappointment.

"There's no way they're announcing anything that has financial impact, or they wouldn't do it now, they'd wait two weeks," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, citing Facebook's upcoming earnings.

"Why would you announce something that has a financial impact during the quiet period?," he said.

Twitter: The Safest Place for Citizen Journalists in Mexico

A cohort of Twitter users with fake names and profile pictures have become a trusted source of information regarding drug cartel violence in Mexico.

These citizen journalists choose to remain anonymous to avoid violent backlash from gang members, but their reports have become increasingly influential.

On Jan. 8, a team from Microsoft Research published a paper called "The New War Correspondents: The Rise of Civic Media Curation in Urban Warfare," which details a social media study conducted over the past two years. Their main finding was that as Mexicans increasingly turn to Twitter for reports of violence, a core of mostly anonymous yet trusted curators have led the dissemination of public safety information.

"You find this small cluster of people, whom we call curators, who tend to be really well-regarded in their cities," Andr?s Monroy-Hern?ndez, one of the paper's five co-authors, tells Mashable. "These particular curators are those that have a lot of followers, which means that they're somewhat trusted by the community."

In the paper, the authors discuss how difficult it was to contact and interview the curators, who feel the work puts their lives in danger.

Those who did reply said that there was a feeling that Mexicans had been "abandoned by their government and the media." Mexico continues to show up on the Committee to Protect Journalists' list of most dangerous countries in the world for members of the media.

"Although traditional journalists regularly serve as curators, both on Twitter and in the more mainstream media outlets, the rise of citizen curators suggests that existing outlets are not meeting public need," the paper reads.

In fact, during the time of his research, Monroy-Hern?ndez says he noticed the mainstream media even began to quote social media as a source in its own reporting:

"Social media has become a source of information for mainstream media, as well as a way for mainstream media to protect itself from retaliation from drug cartels."

"Social media has become a source of information for mainstream media, as well as a way for mainstream media to protect itself from retaliation from drug cartels."

Though these anonymous Twitter curators don't get paid for their work, it doesn't mean they are not dedicated. One told the researchers that spending up to 15 hours a day on Twitter is common.

According to Monroy-Hern?ndez, his general sense is that these people provide this service for altruistic reasons.

Twitter user @BalaceraMTY has been reporting on violence in Monterrey for two years and has amassed more than 60,000 followers. In an email reply to Mashable, the owner of the account said the following:

"It all started on Twitter while I was looking for information on how to protect my relatives and myself, considering how violent the region had gotten at that point. It was vital to be properly informed of such dangerous circumstances. At the same time, I started commenting on the information I was gathering. I never thought my number of followers would grow the way it did. What do I get in return? Nothing economically, it?s not about that. It?s really just the satisfaction of being able to help, the idea of doing something so things can eventually get better."

The anonymous curator says they have been through extremely "hard times" in Monterrey over the past few years, but his or her belief is that things are getting better:

"While there is need to manage information, such as my time and health permits, I will continue trying to do my part."

"While there is need to manage information, such as my time and health permits, I will continue trying to do my part."

Monroy-Hern?ndez says this phenomenon is not specific to Mexico, and that Twitter has emerged as a trusted source of information in other places where violence occurs, particularly relating to organized crime.

For social media outlets to accomodate these reporters, the authors of the paper suggest that "there is a significant need for developing technical strategies to assess trust without revealing identity information."

The authors will formally present their findings at the Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW 2013) conference in late February.

Sony exec teases PS4 announcement for May/June

Sony Home Entertainment vice president Hiroshi Sakamoto has teased a PlayStation 4 announcement for May or June this year.

Asked by Chile news site El Mercurio On-Line at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas whether the PlayStation manufacturer is planning a new console announcement this year, Sakamoto said:

?That?s still a big secret, but our friends at Sony Playstation are getting ready. For now, I can only say that we?re focused in the gaming event E3, scheduled for June.

?This announcement can be by then, or even before then, in May.?

Asked if it would be a ?major announcement? or ?complementary? one, Sakamoto responded: ?Probably the first. On that date, we expect to deliver great news, but we must wait until May, at least.?

Thanks, NeoGAF.

landing pages vs blog posts

Hi all,

Where do you direct traffic to? Do you favour specific landing pages, or blog posts? Are blog posts easier to rank in google?

The pages I have in mind advertise specific areas a service can be performed, and as there are multiple areas in the overall catchment area, I want to create multiple landing pages to capture traffic for all these areas. Does it matter if its a blog or a specific landing page?

What are your thoughts and experiences, I'd love to hear!

Landing pages are generally used on paid advertising campaigns, be it PPC, media or whatever - that way you can funnel the visitors directly to the specific offer and cut the chit chat.

A blog post would probably be easier to rank, and if you have your page layout done correctly then the visitors should still flow to where you want them to go.

If you look at;

In SEJ case they are advertising the subscribe, social and banner ads which are layered throughout the page - but that could be anything including lead gen etc.

as above ^^^^ landing pages are really a PPC/Adwords concept.

A good landing page is specifically designed to maximise conversion (and quality score) for specific Ad campaigns.

Awesome, so you guys would say blog posts would be fine to attract traffic for different location based keywords?

In terms of the good old 'duplicated content', the majority of the blog posts will say roughly the same thing, with only the area changed. How much content can be replicated in each one, and how much needs to be completely fresh?

I'm just testing the water here.

Use geo location, the same post will simply insert the town or city the visitor viewing from.It is used frequently on landing pages and works with a blog just fine.

Saves alot of pages, and besides having mutiples pages saying the same thing will attract unwanted google attention.

Sounds interesting, excuse my ignorance, but is this a wordpress plugin or something? Also, how does this help me target specific areas? For example I would want to offer the service in Manchester, but not Liverpool, so would visitors from Liverpool see the service as being available to them in Liverpool?

Would I not be better just creating similar pages targeting the places I want to target?

My question is really how much duplicate/similar content can I get away with, and how much of each page needs to be 100% unique?

Blog posts are a great way of squeezing in long tail keywords/phrases as well as geo specific ones. They would enable you to discuss the product/service in detail, as it relates to a particular location, without keyword stuffing your main brochure site full of city related pages.

Blog pages are meant to be the bait which attracts visitors to the site, where you then either direct them onward to the products/services they should buy, or capture their contact information so that you can market to them via email.

In my opinion, you don't want to have blog posts which say the same thing except the location, in my opinion that wouldn't help you much (I am guessing your objective is to win organic traffic on a local basis).

Geo-location won't help you with organic local searches as it presents a different location based on the users location. So the Google BOt would see 'Mountain View - California'.

Geo-location is best used for specific landing pages, e.g. you can alter the text to say 'Special Offer this week for people near xxxxxtown'
I would see 'Special Offer this week for people near Staines' webgeek may see 'Special Offer this week for people near Glasgow' baring in mind the geo-location limitation of generally being dependent on the users ISP location, not their actual location . (I put generally in bold as there are exceptions).

Yes the idea is to win local traffic, be it through blog posts or pages. Just looking for any advice on if there is any specific advice either way, or if its much of a muchness? I know the old adage is to test out what works best, was just hoping someone had tested it out already
